About Somenos, British Columbia.
The Somenos is a district located about 10 kilometres north of Duncan that was one of the three (of seven) traditional villages that were dissolved into districts, according to the Cowichan Tribes. In 1862, the available farmland near Victoria was scarce, so to give potential farmers a chance to claim land in Somenos and other areas, Governor Douglas took them up-coast aboard Hecate to Cowichan Bay. The area offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and wildlife, with an abundance of native trees and plants, as well as a variety of birds, mammals, and fish living in nearby wetlands.
