New Denture Care Instructions

Getting used to your new dentures

For the first few weeks, new dentures can feel foreign. Salivary flow may increase temporarily
and sore spots will arise. These usually diminish as your mouth gets accustomed to the new
denture(s). Eating and speaking will take some practice. Choose soft meals to start, cutting pieces
into small portions. These pieces can then be chewed slowly using both sides of your mouth to
avoid dentures tipping out of place. Gradually try other types of food in order to resume a
balanced, nutritional diet. To practice speaking, read aloud and in front of a mirror.

Denture adjustments

If your denture breaks, chips, or cracks please call the office right away. If irritation spots arise
in your mouth after the adjustment period, please see your dentist. Regular oral examination
are still necessary to ensure that dentures continue to fit well and to examine your mouth for
signs of oral disease.  A HARD RELINE WILL NEED TO BE COMPLETED 3-6 MONTHS AFTER INITIAL INSERTION OF DENTURE. THIS RELINE IS COMPLETED AFTER THE GUMS HAVE HEALED FULLY.  PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL BE WITHOUT YOUR DENTURE FOR A NUMBER OF DAYS.

Caring for you new dentures

Dentures are very delicate and may break if dropped. When cleaning your dentures, stand over a folded towel or sink filled with water. Brush all surfaces of your dentures at least once a day to remove food and plaque deposits or denture adhesives. Use a denture brush or a soft bristled toothbrush with nonabrasive toothpaste. When you are not wearing your dentures, store them in cool water (hot water will cause warping) or a denture soaking solution (can be purchased at any pharmacy)

Caring for you mouth

After the adjustment period, it is advised that you to remove your dentures at bedtime.
Otherwise tissues that are constantly covered with denture material can become irritated. Even
if you wear full dentures, you still need to brush your mouth. Using a soft toothbrush, brush
your gums, palate, and tongue before inserting your denture. This will help remove plaque and
stimulate circulation.

ALWAYS REMOVE YOUR DENTURE AT NIGHT AND BRUSH CLEAN IN THE MORNING
