The dental team educates the child (and parent/guardian) using models, computer technology, and child-friendly terminology, thus emphasizing the importance of keeping teeth strong and healthy. In addition, they advise parents on disease prevention, trauma prevention, good eating habits, and other aspects of the home hygiene routine.
Monitoring growth/Intervention
By continuously tracking growth and development through annual dental check- ups, the dentist is able to anticipate dental issues (malocclusion) and quickly intervene before they worsen. Also, working towards earlier corrective treatment preserves the child’s self-esteem and raises a more positive self-image. This corrective treatment may include retainers to initiate dental arch expansion or to maintain dental arch space.
Prevention
Helping parents and children establish healthy eating and oral care habits reduces the chances of later tooth decay. In addition to providing checkups and dental cleanings, other services and instruction will be discussed for your child’s unique set of needs such as; dental sealants and topical fluoride for young teeth, advise parents on thumb- sucking/pacifier/ and provide good demonstrations of brushing and flossing.
It is recommended that parents or guardians schedule a “Chair Ride” appointment with the dentist approximately 6 months after the eruption of the first tooth, or no later than the child’s first birthday.
During the initial visit, the dental team will advise parents to implement a good oral care routine, ask questions about the child’s oral habits, and examine the child’s emerging teeth.
